Intrepid Air and Space Museum – Interactive Installations

As part of SCENE LAB (LINK) myself and Professor Seth Cluett have developed the following two interactive installations for a new exhibition of the Growler submarine at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum in New York, New York.

Sonar

This interactive experience puts visitors in the critical role of Growler’s sonarmen. Visitors will discover that sonar was essential for the safe operation of the submarine and for avoiding detection. Visitors will interact with a console that mimics Growler’s sonar systems, giving them an opportunity to hear and identify the types of sounds that sonarmen would have heard.

Scope of work includes:

  • Finalize concept for interactive
  • Research historically accurate sounds heard through sonar equipment
  • Develop visitor interface
  • Create prototype for visitor testing (INTREPID will conduct testing)
  • Identify necessary equipment, to be approved and purchased by INTREPID
  • Install and test final version in exhibition space

Submarine Vibrations/Operational Sounds)

This interactive experience will demonstrate how Growler’s various systems hummed and vibrated when the sub was in service. The interactive will connect sounds and vibrations with information about Growler’s systems. This experience will center around an immersive audio system surrounding a segment of the floor that vibrates in sync with a soundscape. Visitors will be able to control the sounds through an interface panel.

  • Finalize concept for interactive
  • Intrepid will develop four (4) scenarios that highlight different systems and their sound profiles (for example, the sound of an engine breaking)
  • Research historically accurate sounds
  • Develop visitor interface and guide design team on environmental housing design
  • Create prototype for visitor testing (INTREPID will conduct testing)
  • Identify necessary equipment, to be approved and purchased by INTREPID
  • Install and test final version in exhibition space
