Virtual Rainforest @ MoMA online

This project was part virtual preservation of the objects and the installation of David Tudor’s Rainforest V (variation 1) as it was installed in MoMA’s Kravis Studio. Each object along with the whole exhibition space was 3D scanned using photogrammetry. Each object was then processed at a high resolution detail for 3d form and texture. Along with the 3d scanning Professor Seth Cluett took ambisonic recordings of the installation and space to accurately represent the audio. Once the whole installation was scanned the assets where then converted down to a format that would be best used and viewed on mobile devices.  The …

A UNIVERSE WITHIN ITSELF

“A Universe Within Itself” is an ambitious project that explores the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the realm of creative arts. The aim of this project was to allow AI to generate as much of the film as possible, minimizing human intervention and truly showcasing the capabilities of these advanced tools. The project began with the generation of the script, scene directions, and prompts for still images and video, all of which were handled by Chat GPT 4.0, OpenAI’s state-of-the-art language model. This AI was instrumental in crafting the narrative, setting the scenes, and generating the prompts that guided the …

Hoboken Historical Museum AR app

Greetings from Hudson County A postcard history from then and now This augmented reality app was built for the Hoboken Historical Museum as part of its 2019 “Greetings from Hudson County, A Postcard History – Then & Now” exhibit allows the user to see a selection of historic Hudson County postcards augmented with present-day  180° views of the same location with a brief audio description. A selection of Hoboken postcards in our book, “Greetings from Hoboken: A Postcard History” are also viewable in the same manner. The app will be free to download on ITunes and Android in Jan. 2019   SCENE …

Scholars’ Stones

These small sculptures were created in the tradition of scholars’ rocks or viewing stones using many different digital 3D modeling techniques ranging from 3D scanning, tablet sculpting, and CAD 3D modeling. These objects are made to reflect the means and digital environment from which they come. The cabinet is comprised of the original top section with the two outer glass panes replaced with two-way mirror panels. The bottom base section of the cabinet is a copy of the original cast in dyed aqua resign with plastic cast handles and concrete cast feet. On Going series

Virtual Public Art Project

www.virtualpublicartproject.com 112 Artists 6 Continents 4 Years In March 2010 I created the Virtual Public Art Project an Augmented Reality platform for the public display of digital works of art. VPAP created site-specific sculptures at different real world locations that inviting viewers in for close observation from all sides and from multiple perspectives. Augmented Reality and Public Art Augmented reality is a view of the physical real-world environment merged with virtual computer-generated imagery in real-time. VPAP merges the real-world physical environment of public spaces around the world with site-specific virtual sculptures that can only be viewed in-the-round using the iPhone 3GS …

All Surfaces Become One

Square Cylinder review by Mikko Lautamo These works questions an object’s origin and presence in a world of ubiquitous digital and network technologies. The 3D printed sculptures seamlessly integrate digital and analog processes. While the augmented digital images challenge notions of a polarity between “real” and “digital” objects by simultaneously manifesting as physical and virtual, demonstrating no preference or hierarchy for one experience over the other. The imagery throughout these works is derived from 3D collages created using everyday objects to recycled studio materials. The collages are then scanned using photogrammetery to create 3D models. The 3D models are then translated …

Only as Beautiful as the Objects it Reflects

These works were created by 3D scanning different landscapes, structures, and vegetation. Along with each 3D scan a 360° HDRI image is captured from the same site. First, the 3D scan gets cleaned upped and optimized to be 3D printed. Before printing the model is brought into a 3d environment where it is given a mirrored texture within the software.  The 360° HDRI image then gets placed in the scene as the spherical environment around the object. The reflections on the objects surface then get baked into its surface creating a new texture that welds the reflection of the environment to …

World and Place Evaporating

A walking virtual reality installation In collaboration with Seth Cluett Philosopher and Ecologist Timothy Morton wrote that “ecological awareness consists precisely in concepts such as world and place evaporating, leaving behind real entities that are far closer than they appear in the mirror of human conceptuality.” The framing of ‘the world‘ and of ‘place‘ as grand unifying ideas that define communities is idealized, distancing humans from the inhabited planet and it’s eroding resources. World and Place Evaporating examines layers of reality that both dissipate and reveal, shifting orientations that become incursions on our comfort, and the ever shifting framing of our point of reference that highlight the narratives we tell ourselves …

Excavatum

DailyServing.com Review by A. Will Brown These works draw inspiration from ideas of duality of what is real and illusionary, organic and non-organic. This series of work, Excavatum specifically references the interplay between positive and negative sculptural shapes in space. Challenging sculptural tradition by using new materials and techniques, Manzione applies recent technology to carve plastic forms that fluctuate between the whimsical and the grotesque. The artist employs digital modeling, three-dimensional scanning, computer numerically controlled milling, and rapid prototyping to manufacture each of the objects on display. Echoing the artist’s sculptural forms, two-dimensional lenticular prints reveal three-dimensional imagery when viewed from different angles. A prodigious ink-black cavern interrupts the white box architecture …

Dazzle

Dazzle was inspired by the camouflage paintings of war ships from the 1910’s.  I aimed to create an initial mis-perception from a distance that continues and changes as you approach and move around the sculpture. This effect is emphasized by the high contrast white and black rectilinear pattern on the surface that interacts with the overall shape of the sculpture. At a certain point you begin to realize what it is your seeing and why you might have seen it incorrectly at first. The accuracy and way your perception functions is brought to your attention. The form of the sculpture is very polygonal like …

To Notice and Remember

First shown as part of Space Between the Skies @ Apex Art that I also curated in March 2016. This project was made in collaboration with Seth Cluett and Ricky Graham by using virtual reality technology and a custom ambisonic spatial audio system to immerse viewers in an uncanny 3D environment. By using sophisticated LIDAR technology and 360° audio recording equipment, this group captured a site in New Jersey to create a virtual reality experience that sonically guides the viewer into a serene, enveloping space. However, the recording from the scanner by Manzione is purposefully incomplete and fractured. Cluett and Graham then re-fill the space left over …
